What I Learned At Today's Home Inspection

Often when I am at a home inspection I come away with a tip or two to use myself and share with customers. After 25 years of home inspections, you’d think that I’ve heard it all but that couldn’t be further from the truth, especially as new home technology emerges in the marketplace. That said, sometimes I still learn something new that is incredibly low tech. Case in point, just today I had a home inspector tell a client and myself that by leaving the pilot light on year round in your gas fireplace you effectively prevent wasps, hornets, bees and even birds from making a nests inside it AND you save your liner from corroding due to condensation!

For years, wasps were entering our house in the warm weather months and in order to prevent this I put a fine mesh screen up over the vent. It worked fine but had to be removed during the winter months to prevent ice build-up and thereby not venting….quite dangerous! My husband had been turning off the gas to our fireplace every summer and therefore the pilot light could not ignite. If only I had known this little trick sooner it would have saved several trips up and down a very tall ladder and the need to come up with our vent screen concoction.

Stay tuned for more tips…as I learn them….on keeping your home happy. – Jenny
