Everything in your house will wear out eventually. But, do you know when? Sometimes, equipment can outlive it’s estimated lifespan and other times they die young. For the purpose of this blog, we’re going to assume they make it past middle age. But, what is the typical lifespan of a furnace, hot water heater or a/c unit? Did you know it is aprx. 10-15 years if cared for properly, which means more than just telling your furnace you love it and praying it lives long enough for you to win the lottery. I chuckle as I mention this because THAT is exactly what my husband and I did after purchasing our first house. I suspect we’re not alone. Caring for your HV/AC equipment properly means annual check-ups by a trusted HV/AC technician, changing your filters monthly and making sure you are using the right filters for your unit and everything is sized correctly for your home. The first two items are obvious BUT I bet you didn’t know that some furnace filters will cause your furnace to run hot thus shortening the life of your unit, especially the costly allergen protecting ones. Sometimes, cheaper is better and if you don’t suffer from horrible allergies you might want to save money on filters and extend the lifetime of your furnace. I digress. Going back to the topic of this blog When to Repair and When to Replace your Furnace/AC Unit, experts suggest you only repair if the repair cost is less than half the replacement value. If your furnace, air conditioning unit (or hot water heater) is near the end of its lifespan or is incorrectly sized for your home, replacing it with a more efficient model can save you money in the long run.
